NPR: Project Song - Chris Walla/J. Robbins

NPR: Project Song
October 12, 2009 - Not everyone can write and record a song in two days, but that's the Project Song challenge faced by Chris Walla (of Death Cab for Cutie) and J. Robbins (of Jawbox and Burning Airlines). What made this project especially difficult was that the two had never even met before they stepped into NPR's performance studio.

But it didn't take long for Robbins to pick up his bass guitar, for Walla to pick up a guitar, and for the two to begin their musical friendship.

I supplied some inspiration for their song: photo collages created by artist Tom Chambers. They chose a photograph of a house in a canyon filled with water, tilted and flooded. Not far from the house is a dog on a boat, floating either toward or away from the house. I also supplied a series of words. They selected the word "cerebral" and promised when they wrote the song not to be too cerebral about it.

Walla and Robbins were joined by Robbins' friend, drummer Darren Zentek. The song they created, "Mercury," takes its subject matter from that photograph, which is a bit of a cataclysmic scenario turned into a song about the climate crisis.

And a great song it is. You can hear the music and watch a video documenting the creative process as it unfolds.

I love working with great lyrics and this one has been in my head since the first time I saw these two talented gentlemen a few years ago. "Honesty" is one of those anthems, where everyone in the crowd sings-a-long to the chorus and raises their "Lone Star" or "Shiner." The amount of beer bottles comes from one nite with the band...not really, it's an attempt to visually express the relationship of alcohol and the lies during social gatherings. If all else fails, lets just tell some great stories and crack open another!

Finally new work! The guys of News on the March were nice enough to ask for a last minute poster for their February 22nd show at the Mink with the talented Elaine Greer and The Gills (Florida). Not really sure if the poster needs much of an explanation...both NotM and Greer's lyrics explore the loss and the longing to wake up next to that one special someone. I know its been awhile...a long while. A lot has occurred during these past six months: adopting two kitties, having my identity stolen, learning how to tie a tie...thank you to youtube, broken hearted, and meeting Matt Ward, Gillian Welch, David Rawlings, & Bill Murray in the same evening! Some other notable events occured but my poor memory and eagerness to post once again limits the length of this entry. On a positive note, here is the first of many more post and new work. It was inspired by a comment at work...or rather a combination of words. These two words, "Paper" & "Cut", were turning over in my head for the rest of the afternoon and turned into this:

The first edition is limited to 30 albums each xeroxed transfered by hand in a poorly ventilated apartment. Also each CD has a unique water-colour painting by Sergio...so each album is completely unique, no two album packages are the same.

This clip is from NPR's, "Project Song: All Things Considered," the challenge: Write and record a song — in two days. (They provide the studio and the inspiration.) On this edition of Project Song, songwriter Stephin Merritt (Magnetic Fields).

Stephin Merritt says he learned a crucial lesson from a group many musicians might sneer at. "I read an interview with ABBA a long time ago," says Merritt, the creative force behind the cult-phenom band the Magnetic Fields." They said they never write down the music — because they figure if they cannot remember it, then other people will not remember it."

The provided inspirations is six vivid images, along with six words or phrases printed on white cards. The instructions: Choose one photo to inspire the subject of the song; choose a word or phrase that will inspire the style.

Chris Walla of Death Cab for Cutie fame recently released a solo album titled, Field Manual. To those not familiar with Christopher, he is the guitarist, as well as the producer of Death Cab for Cutie. In addition to the Death Cab recordings he also produced The Decemberists Picaresque and Crane's Wife, Tegan and Sara's The Con, as well as many others. If you are scratching your head and asking if its worth checking out, imagine how awesome a Death Cab albums sounds and the song "New Candles," plus any other song with sweet back up vocals and thats a should give you a clue to how the album sounds. If that is not enough check out the links below. By the by, later this year Walla and company will release their 2008 release, Narrow Stairs, in the spring. Oh yeah, turns out he was born exactly ten years before me, maybe thats why he is cool?

Official Japanese trailer for Harmony Korine's new film, Mister Lonely, starring Diego Luna, Y tu mamá también, works as a Micheal Jackson impersonator in Paris meets a Marilyn Monroe look-a-like invites him to an impersonator commune in the Scottish Highlands, where she lives with Charlie Chaplin and her daughter, Shirley Temple. The cast also consists of Samantha Morton, Denis Lavant, Rachel Korine, Anita Pallenberg and Werner Herzog. The film is not yet released but can be viewed at SXSW for two special screenings next week.

Happy Mondays, I mean Thursday. How is everyone doing? Oh, thats good to hear. hehe, So I guess to update, the job search continues, more like waiting. The website is still under construction, I know it was just a couple months ago when it went online-but it needs a face-lift and added features. In the mean time, here is a sneak peak of what will be included.

Here is an identity I designed while working at Acumen Design, it is for Ninfa's Mexican Kitchen. The folks at Ninfa's want a new image that will compliment their new stores and set-up in the existing restaurants. Ninfa's really enjoy the compact labels of Mexican beer identities and wanted to bring emphasis to the name "Mexican Kitchen." from what I gathered the new restaurants will have demonstrations, ex: tortilla making and so on.

As many of you may know, (the three or two, possibly just one that reads this) I am graduating next month. I am not one for excuses but pardon the lack of posts recently–you would think since I am on the computer more it would equal more posts. Not so my friends.

During the crazy hours of working on the portfolio, many tunes are played in my speakers and some of them stay in my head for hours, on non-stop rotation. This is one of them; its not a bad thing at all, its one of my favourite songs and its from one of my favourite eps, from one of my all time favourite bands--Spoon-"Love Ways-EP". Alice - Jan Svankmajer

In keeping with my long stretch of other folk's work I like to introduce Jan Svankmajer's film Alice, the original absurdly amazing 1988 interpretation of Alice in Wonderland. This stop-action, animation, live action, creepy, fun, film mixes all of those afore mentioned words into a visual adventure only Svankmajer can tell. At one time the whole feature was available on youtube but thanks in part to proper copy right restricitons only bits and pieces are now streamable. 2007 Design in the Fast Lane

Greetings and salutations, yesterday the AIGA Houston Chapter hosted the 2007 Design in the Fast Lane. In the Gerald D. Hines Architecture building, over 150 students, young professionals, and educators gathered for a day of lectures, school portfolio exhibition/competition, lunch, and answering the question, "What creates a spark?"

I was let down to find no dog named "sparkie," could you imagine the antics of a St. Bernard wearing a DFL t-shirt and barrel of first aid, roaming around freely and knocking over tables as he pleases? He would also aid those who are in need! I think it would have made it much more successful.

The actual event started bright and early at 8:00 am, students signed-in, grabbed their bag of free stuff, viewed fellow-student work, and made their way to the auditorium. In there they viewed this introduction...note that it was looped and was on a huge projector screen. For your viewing pleasure of those who did not attend the event as well as those who did and totally dig the clip, have at it yo.

Christian Helms of The Decoder Ring Design Concern, kicked off the event with the key note speech. Christian shared his story, solutions, and "sparks." Greetings, I apologies that this is not updated as often as I like and that I have yet to put new work up in awhile. Fear not, I came across some new work--in a field that I am new to. What is that you ask? Modeling! I guess watching America's Next Top Model marathons with my girlfriend rubbed off. Thats right I learned and studied their ways--it paid off! I got the cover of the new catalog for The Art Institute of Houston. Notice my off centered positioning of my arm as it rest in my pocket, I studied that timid/chilled poise from the pros. Well enough of this awful rant, I am starting to scare myself. This documentary, The ABCs of DADA, was shown in my high school senior art class randomly one day. It blew my mind, my jaw feel from my skull and I watched with awe and wonder. My narrow-minded peers were annoyed and ignored the video, many slept--how, I am not sure. I never seen anything like this before that monumental day, my instructor wanted to play something to keep us busy while she graded, read, and/or to just keep us quiet. I also would like to add, there was little discussion or lecture over art history, except the more popular movements: Surrealism, Renaissance, Impressionism, PopArt, and anything documented in the World History class. I asked for a copy of the video but forgot my teacher's email address, but thanks to the magic of youtube--we can enjoy the video anytime we wish to stream.

I know its been awhile since a post so to make up for lost time, I found two compositions for your viewing pleasure. They were found while digging through piles of work, I am some what of a pack rat. The two pieces were completed over a year ago. They are assemblages using hand and computer generated methods. I am not certain if they will be used in my portfolio, maybe in a new exciting format.

The first composition was used to communicate a news paper article. The article documented the owner of an independent record store in NYC and the decline of success due to the rise of itunes and ipods.
The second project was to create a poster for a DADA exhibit made of a paper-collage and set type that reflects the movement.

Many may be familiar with Miranda July from the motion picture, where she acted and directed in Me and You and Everyone We Know. Miranda's work extends beyond film, she is also a performance artist and writer. This nicely printed release is titled, No One Belongs Here More Than You, is a collection of 16 short stories that explores various relationships and the pursuit/understanding of love and acceptance. Filled with awkward, hilarious, lonely, naked moments that can only be set up by July. Her original voice introduces you to many individuals you may have walked passed and shares their confessions with immediacy. Miranda made a website to promote the book release and like everything she creates, it is not ordinary but fun.

Meet "Eggie", he aids me during the consumption of hard-boiled eggs. "Eggie" came to me by way of England thanks to my lovely girlfriend. The neat green fellow's proper name is Cico and was designed by Stefano Giovannoni. Stefano is an Industrial Designer and Architect from Italy. Giovannoni's work is used all over the world in households that appreciate and enjoy his aesthetic, functional, modern pieces. Alberto Alessi, general manager of Alessi (huge Italian Housewares Design company), comments from a lecture in 2001 (stefanogiovanni.it) that Stefano's work captures "the playful, boldly expressive approach" and "neominimalistic approach that leans toward simplicity and the pursuit of the essential, using a kind of language that is abstract." Giovannoni also teaches and researches in the Florence Faculty of Architecture, at Domus Academy in Milan and at the University del Progetto in Reggio Emilia. Happy October-eve to you all, I am happy to bring you another installment of wonderful work that is not mine but I sure dig. This past Friday, I finally saw Papermoons perform. The duo, Matt Clark and Daniel Hawkins, play wonderful music that is best described as "killer harmonies, sweet guitar licks, with lo-fi drums." They released their debut 7" ep (yes kids, some bands release actual records) on the label Team Science Records with great artwork from Jacob Calle. I'm a sucker for colourful vinyl; this record is not only colourful but has complementing streaks of colour! Yes, complementing streaks of colour!!! The jamming folk-rockin' band will embark on a tour this fall, kicking off on Friday the 12th of October at the Proletariat. Go listen, support, and enjoy.

first edition beignyeti t-shirts

Howdy again, Yes the title is correct, this past weekend you have witness the birth of the first plush beignyeti and now the first edition of beignyeti t-shirts. The first edition is super special and exclusive to only two pieces, the one shown below and the second, a light purple girl shirt, will be shown at a later time--both printed on comfy, nice, superior-quality American Apparel standard t-shirts. This edition was completed Thursday night before embarking on the powdered-sugar pilgrimage to his homeland.

fear not, there will be models soon with much nicer bodies to display the tasty t-shirts.

It is fitting that the first beignyeti: t-shirts and plush are completed and enjoyed in NOLA...their place of conception-not in the birthing manner but the action of concepting. The artwork of beignyeti was just picked up yesterday by the glbt and the studio took a few pictures before it went on its way to judging or what it is they do with it. The image is pretty much the same as before but is in a frame...so for your special viewing pleasure I added the first composition I was considering for the event. I was adviced, the audience might not find this as humorous as I do.

Good morning, The status on the process book, is that it is not yet complete but three of the five projects are represented in the layout. So far there are over 40 pages and I have two huge projects left to show. This may be the largest book I have designed so far. Recently I heard about Casiotone for the Painfully Alone and was fortunate to see him perform with the great David Bazan yesterday at Walter's on Washington. The show was inspiring to see these two talented men perform what they have created alone or collaborated. Afterwards, I was compelled to go home and make stuff-but soon realized sleep was more realistic and necessary. Below is a shorten bio and links to tracks from Casiotone for the Painfully Alone.

Casiotone for the Painfully Alone is the musical alias of 28 year old American film school drop-out Owen Ashworth. Ashworth began making music in 1997 after he realized that song-making was a far more cost-effective means of storytelling than film-making.

Ashworth used battery operated keyboards and electronics recorded to 4-track cassettes for his first three albums. Casiotone for the Painfully Alone sound consisted of raw, emotional, homemade synth pop. These two-minute character studies shuddered with reverbed beats, blown-out chords, and simple but infectous melodies, all layered beneath Ashworth's sometimes funny but always heartbreaking lyrics.

Believing he had taken his self-imposed set of limitations to their logical conclusion, Ashworth expanded his sound with 2006's Etiquette. Etiquette removes the focus from a decidedly utilitarlian aesthetic to a broader production spectrum that finally gives Ashworth's personal, affecting song writing the space it deserves. In the new release, the sound of Casiotone for the Painfully Alone has grown to include pianos, organs, strings, flutes, drums, and pedal steel guitars in addition to Ashworth's signature electronics and drum machines.

The concept of the blog's title and my promotional printed pieces all stem from a conversation that I had with a friend over the quality of work being produced before us and as a part of a cleaver one-liner I mentioned "I do not make half ass work, only full ass work." This was a hit with us and those of whom we shared the lines.

This quarter I was fortunate to take Sequential Design with the instruction of William Lanigan, the chair of the Interior Design program, but apparently his credentials go further than architecture and interior design...Lanigan has experience with motion application. To be brief, I learned a lot in this class and it may or may not show in this clip but I am interested in learning more with motion graphics.

Beignyeti is an amazing fellow, born in New Orleans, Louisiana. This fluffy pastry was born in the world famous original Cafe du Monde in the French Market. All that I know so far is that this lively little guy just wants to make everyone happy and bring his powdered sugar love to those who are sad or lonely.

Step One.
the dough is rolled in to balls.

deep fried to glowing perfection.

Step Three.
clouded with powder sugar. if there is powdered sugar in a 3-foot radius of the newly formed beignyeti, then you have done well.

greetings limited readers!
welcome to the start of a new exciting blog, sure to be full of pictures, drawings, and other stuff that is the opposite of typed words. for those of you looking for full asses-you have come to the wrong place my non-friends. the only full ass you will find here is work that contains my "literal device like a metaphor perhaps" full ass. so sorry for the false adverts and misleading name.

well i guess i should commence this,
currently the state i am in is limited and hindered by a slight sinus infection...im trying to convince myself i am not too ill so i can do a lot more work. it is the weekend before finals and will be consumed with the finishing up of projects. so far all that is left is to complete my process book for my senior project class. the class should be called "self-promotion" all the various promotional pieces are created in the afore mentioned class include: stationary system which includes: buisness cards (sounds dirty, info cards sounds better), letterhead, and envelope, leavebehind (something to "leave behind" to make an impression on the potential employer), and process book (used to show how the student create their solutions).

i just completed a painting piece for the gay, lesbian, legion whatever its called-its a long name. it took longer than i anticipated and become very involved with the creation of it. i think its the reason why i become sick i hope to take a lot of pictures of it before it goes on its way into someones home or trash can. well, i should get back to work. till next time.
